Hi everyone!

Hoping to find some folks local to Los Angeles with any referrals or resources available regarding Tesla Coils, or other high voltage electricity demonstrations. I'm aware of the coil at Griffith Observatory, but would love to connect w/ other local enthusiasts, schools, groups, etc !
Any help would be sincerely appreciated!! Thanks!

I am in Thousand Oaks, very amateur! I prefer the instant gratification
of small coils (NST powered), but I do have a 10" coil that has not been
energized for many years.

Brian, do you have a RSG or ASRG avail? or a good  motor for such?  I am
looking for a solution.  I have a rotor and electrodes, just no motor.
Thanks

I'm in Thousand Oaks as well.

I'm in the middle of building 7 small coils.

Check the list archives - there were a lot of people modifying a regular
60 Hz induction motor to make it "synchronous" by grinding the rotor down.

The other approach is a DC motor with a speed control servo scheme of
some sort. Depending on the size, you might be able to repurpose an off
the shelf Variable Speed Drive by combining it with a speed sensor to
make a control loop.

Thanks

Hi ???,

I stopped making the synchronous motors quite a while ago. The Dayton motors I was modifying were no longer available and the GE motors worked but there was just barely enough rotor to do the job (it was 1/3 that of the Dayton).

A note to everyone - Please sign with a name so we know who we are talking too.

Apologies, sorry for the delayed response! I made my post and then promptly left town on vacation, I should have waited :-/

I’m a bit of an audio recording enthusiast and was hoping to capture some quality sounds of high voltage electricity arcs, streams, plasma, etc! Most of the examples I’m finding available online in this department are kind of broadband blasts of white noise, and they’re mainly for the sake of scientific/academic demonstrations. I figure there must be a more “nuanced way” of getting some cool sounds out of electricity :)

Let me know if anyone local(ish) to the Los Angeles area has any ideas! I really appreciate it.
Thanks!
John

Well, yes. You can either pulse modulate or amplitude modulate electric
arcs to make certain frequencies. You can play music. Check youtube for
“musical tesla coil” and you’ll find many videos.

I’m in the San Gabriel Valley area of LA county but my coil isn’t anywhere near some of the higher output coils we all love so much. Mine is a RQSG coil.
